About IRMA
IRMA was established in 1979 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Verghese Kurien, popularly known as the Father of the White Revolution in India. The foundation of IRMA emerged from the experience gained during the implementation of Operation Flood, the world’s largest dairy development programme launched by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1970. The programme highlighted the urgent need for professionally trained rural managers capable of handling the complexities of large-scale rural development initiatives involving millions of people. To address this need, IRMA was founded with the support of NDDB, the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC), the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat, and the erstwhile Indian Dairy Corporation.
Today, IRMA stands as a premier institution dedicated to professional education and research in rural management. The institute offers specialized management programmes designed to develop socially conscious leaders who can understand and address real-world socio-economic challenges faced by underserved communities. IRMA emphasizes experiential learning through intensive fieldwork, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical realities.
The institute is supported by experienced faculty members from reputed national and international institutions who mentor and inspire students to become innovative thinkers and responsible professionals. Spread across a lush 60-acre green campus, IRMA provides world-class infrastructure and a vibrant academic environment that encourages learning, research, and leadership development.
IRMA also maintains strong collaborations with government agencies, non-government organizations, cooperatives, and international development institutions. These partnerships create a dynamic ecosystem for students, offering opportunities for research, field engagement, and hands-on implementation experience through real developmental projects. Through its unique approach, IRMA continues to contribute significantly towards sustainable rural development and inclusive growth in India.
